There are a lot of things that parents prepare for the coming of their baby. Birth announcements are one of these important events that most parents are excited about. It is a time to tell their friends and relatives about the birth of their new family member. Sometimes, preparing for a birth announcement could also serve as a reunion event for friends and relatives whom the parents haven’t seen for a long time.

Hosting a birth announcement is something that shows how excited and proud new parents are for their baby’s arrival. Preparing for this event is not impossible since we are now living in a modern world where many high technology gadgets are being invented and introduced. Some may think that it is quite expensive to host a birth announcement event but with creative ideas, parents will be able to give the best kind of birth announcement for their new child.

It is also great to make some invitation for birth announcements. Announcing the arrival of a new member in the family using personalized photo birth announcement cards is one of the steps in preparing for this important event. One just needs to think of the best idea for the card’s theme and content, incorporate it in a photo and print it as a card.

Some companies offer services that include card customization. It helps us to easily produce personalized photo birth announcement cards. These companies also provide other services like sending the announcement cards to the invited guests- friends and relatives’ addresses with a minimal fee added. Not all birth announcements are made for babies who are newly born. It could also be prepared and hosted for babies who are adopted to welcome them in their new family.

Some of the information that should be included in a birth announcement card or invitation is baby’s name, the stats, the date of birth and the name of the parents and siblings (if any). Also, capture the best photo of your child to be used in the cards. Digital cameras today allow instant pictures to be used as a photo card.

Sending the cards 2 weeks before the event would give ample time for your invited guests to prepare for the occasion. If they are living far from the birth announcement venue, this time frame will be enough for them to buy and pick the most appropriate date for their flights to attend your event.

It is the most heartwarming event that could be made in celebrating the arrival of a new addition in your family. Birth announcements shared with friends and relatives could be the best gathering of the year for your family and most especially for your new child!

Cloth, Fabric, Towelling Nappies, Reusable or Washable Nappies and so on…. whatever you would like to call them – you either love them or you hate them.  Or maybe not!!

It dawned on me today as I lovingly hung my reusable nappies up to dry how my opinion has totally changed towards using such nappies.  I mean, nearly 7 years ago with my first and then second child, the thought of even using a reusable cloth nappy was totally HORRIFIC! Never ever would I ever do such a thing.  I probably had good intentions and bought the really old fashioned towelling nappies to “try” but by the time my son was born they became burping towels and nothing more.

So anyway today I pondered what is different now from then? A mindset? Maturity? Different circumstances at home?

I suppose all of the above but most definately its amazing how nobody can force you to change your mind.  Yes mindsets do change but you can be so adament about something and then something happens – you see something, someone says something and then there’s that little click in your head that goes, “Hmmmmm, maybe maybe”. Its not forced or coerced but your brain just clicks. And then starts to tick over a bit…. Its the same with reusable nappies.

We are so “trained” to think of only disposables and we are told that they are so easy, that reusables are too much like hard work and we’re too busy to use such nappies. And yes disposables are easy and Im definately not running them down as they do have a place and a time but have you ever thought that you need to have your clothes washed or your linen or towels washed? Why not wash nappies? Its not like you are washing poop – thats why you have a biodegradable liner to flush it all down the toilet!! And you are saving massive amounts of money as for example the Cherub Tree Cloth Nappy is an all in one so your baby can grow in it from birth to potty trained! (You can also pass them down to siblings!) AND you are doing a small little bit to help the environment which we actually all need to consider seeing that just ONE disposable nappy takes more than 100 years to breakdown. Scary stuff.

So I hope you have had a little click experience? Maybe, maybe not or maybe later!

They are so easy to use, durable (I’ve passed mine down from no 3 to no 4)

All about Grandmothers

All About Grandmothers

Rooti Tooti Granny has been musing about Grandmothers!

My two Grandmothers – maternal was Granny, paternal was Gran, are both still clear in my memory for their differences and their similarities.

Granny was a plump ally who wore corsets and had her hair permed, she kept a truly spotless house and always changed into a smart dress (with jewellery and fresh lipstick) in the afternoon after she had prepared the vegetables for the evening meal – I presume this was so that visitors could be received with ease.

Gran was an energetic little lady – quite feisty and taking no nonsense. She cycled well into her seventies and continued to play a role in the family business after she was widowed. She boldly took the boat across the Atlantic to visit her siblings in Canada and the USA, on her own in the 1940′s – adventurous and determined!

And what has this to do with me today, you ask? Well clearly I am a mixture of the two – I leave it to those that know the Rooti Tooti family to decide which characteristics I have inherited! What I do know is that we now live in a different world and I don’t think you can easily compare our lives.

Is my forthcoming little jaunt to California comparable to Gran boarding a passenger boat to sail to Canada? Are my stories and cuddles for the Rooti Tooti babies as loving as my Grannies were – I do so hope they are and will be as long remembered! I hope that a mixture of feisty (well perhaps we should say determined) and hardworking has been inherited, and in its turn passed on.

Perhaps its this that helped us to set up Rooti Tooti and work through the hurdles of the initial stages to give us the successful internet company that it is today. Who would have thought that these two different grandmothers would have a role in a family company providing lovely breastfeeding clothing for mothers? Would they approve? I think they would.

As a final note, keep your grandmother sweet as she will no doubt have plenty of wisdom stored away and ready to impart when the time comes!

Rooti Tooti is a family based company, passionate about promoting breastfeeding. We sell a range of nursing clothing that helps mothers breastfeed confidently and discreetly when out and about.

Bed Wetting Effects On Your Child

There are different causes of bed wetting, it is not just something your child would do to get into your nerves.  These are night time accidents that could happen even with the best potty trained children.  Some would say that children would outgrow bed wetting, but there are some parents who are anxious to help their children get over with them.  Bed wetting could interfere with your child’s social activities like attending slumber parties and camps.  Aside from interfering with social activities, it could also affect the child’s confidence and esteem.

Within the age of five years old, about 20% of children still wet their beds.  For parents and children, it is important to know that this is a common problem and not just a problem with your child.  Doctors and medical professionals would often stress on the fact that bed wetting is not intentional and your child is not to be blamed with the situation.  Some parents or family members approach bed wetting as a big problem or issue which adds to the pressure and stress on the child.

As mentioned, bed wetting could have an impact on your child’s confidence and self-esteem.  There are debates about this relation, however, there are also medical researches showing that bed wetting management was able to help in improving the child’s self-esteem.  Children and adolescents acknowledge that bed wetting could be a stressful event in the family.  Bed wetting closely follows divorce and parents fighting as  a family problem according to children and adolescents.

Some children who suffer from bed wetting or nocturnal enuresis can get punished by parents, teased by siblings and other relatives, and tend to keep it as a secret from friends for the fear of getting embarrassed or ashamed. There are also studies showing that children tend to develop behavioural problems that are often associated with the stress and the low-self –esteem of children with nocturnal enuresis. Children could feel guilty or withdrawn especially if they sensed that they have no control over the problem.

Behaviour problems could even manifest in the schools.  There are studies showing that children suffering from bed wetting tend to be more aggressive and project a poor self-image.  These children may also have problems paying attention in class, get lower grades and overall performance in school.

A child who wets the bed may consider this night time incident as a big time problem.  As a parent and family members, it is important to downplay this problem.  Stress caused by bed wetting may even worsen the incident.  Constant assuring is important.  Children may feel that they are the only ones who experience bed wetting in their age.  Assure your kid that what he is experiencing is a common problem.  It is just that children may be embarrassed to talk about it.  You could even share a story of another family member who also had trouble with bed wetting but was able to get over it.  Assure your child that you will be with him all the way.

There are studies showing that children who have problems with bed wetting often would say that the best thing about staying dry will be participating in sleepovers and camps.  This may make your child feel isolated.  And feeling isolated is never good for anyone.

Choosing a toy for a toddler

During the early stages of a child’s life their brain is learning in an exponential manner. It is important that their brain is stimulated and one of the best ways to do this is by giving them toys.

I would suggest that for a toddler a soft toy is the best way forward – they won’t hurt their siblings by throwing it at them.

One of the things you need to look carefully at is what recommended age range the toy is for. An age range of 4+ would signify possible small parts – the last thing you want is for your child to choke on a toy they are playing with.

Here are some recommendations :

Manhattan Toys – these soft toys are designed with a small child in mind – their Baby Stella collection is an obvious choice.

Hand puppets – these are great for encouraging your child to role play and develop their imagination.

Soft books – these are an excellent introduction to books – choose something bright and colourful

Goovy Girls – great for kids with a passion for fashion

In conclusion a toy for a small child needs to be chosen carefully – try and make sure it is educational, fun and safe.

Here are some general guidelines to keep in mind when toy-shopping:

  • Toys made of fabric should be labeled as flame resistant or flame retardant.
  • Stuffed toys should be washable.
  • Painted toys should be covered with lead-free paint.
  • Art materials should say nontoxic.
  • Crayons and paints should say ASTM D-4236 on the package, which means that they’ve been evaluated by the American Society for Testing and Materials.

Steer clear of older toys, even hand-me-downs from friends and family. Those toys might have sentimental value and are certainly cost-effective, but they may not meet current safety standards and may be so worn from play that they can break and become hazardous.
