As one year olds are just learning about how to use their motor skills effectively and how things work around them, they love some sense of consistency and repetition. That is why one great toy that goes over well with one year olds is a Busy Ball Popper that was made by Playskool. This toy is bright in color and will attract your baby to it with its bright yellow bowl and orange tunnel. The baby will have five balls to drop into the bowl, then watch as it slides down the tunnel, and then it pops back up out again from the other side so they can start the entire process all over again. A toy like this would really please your baby as it would help them have that consistency and repetition that would bring them so much joy.
Sometimes at that age, if a baby sees something and then it disappears, it can cause some kind of cognitive dissonance in the child and make them feel alarmed or disturbed. That is why, with this toy, the baby sees the progress of the ball and then has it returned to them immediately to start the entire process all over again. As the ball always comes back, the baby will feel secure with the toy and will most likely spend a lot of time with it. Dropping the ball into the bowl will help the baby strengthen some motor skills of lifting and aiming and dropping and then doing it all over again.
Other toys that are wonderful for children that are one or younger are bouncy types of sit down toys. These are usually ones that stand on the ground and are fairly low. They can come in the shape of an animal, a car, or any other kind of thing upon which a seat is placed. The baby sits on it, holds onto the handles, and then bounces up and down on the springs upon which the toy is built. This usually gives the baby a lot of joy to feel that motion of being up and down and usually they will have to work hard with their legs jumping up and down to make the item go up and down. This will help your baby be active during playtime and will help the baby begin to pave the way for the world of imaginative playtime. If your baby is one, he or she might begin to imagine things as he or she rides on the bouncy toy, maybe recall instances of things he or she has seen on television or in real life and that is an important foundation for babies at that age.
Another great toy is made by Fisher Price and it is a toy animal farm with sounds. It comes with tiny figures, so it must be used for children that are one or nearly there and it is a farmhouse that stands almost the height of your baby sitting down. Your baby can arrange the farm yard figures in various places of the farm yard and press buttons that will play animal sounds that babies will love. Babies will be able to match the sounds to the corresponding animals and not only will it teach them what sounds various animals make, but will help them learn to make the sounds, too, enhancing their communication skills.

Many pre-school teachers are already singing “Five Little Monkeys” with their students and are hoping to make it more engaging and useful by adding sign language signs while singing. By doing so, the signs can help children better understand the meaning of the song, learn and easily remember new vocabulary words, and have fun while doing so. The following are some of the signs I suggest you use and teach to your students so they can sign along as they sing: Five – 5 fingers up
Four – 4 fingers up
Three – 3 fingers up (thumb, pointer, middle)
Two – 2 fingers up
One – 1 finger up
*For all numbers (up to 5), your palm should face towards you
Monkeys – scratch sides like monkey
Jumping – bounce 2 fingers on the palm of your other hand as if your fingers are legs jumping
Bumped head – make sign for hurt by touching pointer fingers together by head
Call – make phone shape with thumb and pinky and hold up to ear and move forward
Doctor – bend one hand a little and act like you are taking your pulse at your wrist
No – pointer and middle finger snap down to the thumb The following are the lyrics for “Five Little Monkeys:”
Five little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
Mama called the doctor and the doctor said
No more monkeys jumping on the bed Continue the song counting down from five through one, until no monkeys remain. Remember, you can find out more information about signing with your baby on my website. I have a free video where I reveal my #1 secret on how you can drastically reduce your baby’s crying and temper tantrums which you find at www.babysignlanguageonline.com For more ideas, visit www.babysignlanguageonline.com/blog

Many people save their baby sheets because they feel their children grow up too fast, and they keep them to remember when their child was very small. Most families get a few sets of sheets for a shower gift, but there are many sizes and they may have to go out and buy more. This can be pricy, but some sheets are really good without having to cost more than the crib or the bed. There are some safety issues to keep in mind when shopping for them however, and it is more important that they be safe than cheap.
Baby sheets should fit the mattress tightly and securely. It might even be a good idea to have some sort of way to secure the sheets to each other so that there is no chance that they will come up while the baby is sleeping. Baby sheets can come loose and wrap around the neck or the head and the baby could suffocate. This is why it is essential to have the right size, and this also means that used sheets probably are not a good idea. They may have been stretched out of shape and the elastic might not be as good as it once was.
There are different sizes of baby sheets, and some have to be hand or special made. Anything that goes in a bassinet must fit the tiny mattress securely, and these might not be easy to find. Most baby sheets come in standard crib size, but when buying a special crib, it is important to know how easy it will be to find sheets that will fit an odd shaped mattress. Though the corner style crib seems very cute, it might be hard to get sheets for it. The same can be said for the mattress that are much thicker than others. The sheets might be expensive as well.
Though the initial buying of baby sheets might be a little expensive, the good news is that in many cases they are something that can be used long after the baby is out of the crib. The toddler sized bed mattress usually is the same size as the crib, and some cribs even turn into a toddler sized bed. A child might not be in this size for very long, but they may be able to sleep in this size until age five. After that a twin will be needed, and of course, more sheets.
