Buying a Double Pushchair: A Consumer’s Guide

Parents have customarily had two choices when buying double strollers; those in which the child seats were one in front of the other and those in which the seats were positioned side to side. There is now another design which is a stroller for a single baby convertible into a double buggy.

There are advantages and disadvantages with each. Buggies with seats in the front and back are more narrow, and therefore easier to use when strolling down streets with lots of people, shops, dogs, etc.  However, these can be a little hard to steer, and the child in the back does not get much in the way of scenery. Strollers with seats next to one another tend to be easier to steer, however, going through doors with them, up and down narrow stairways, through a building, etc, can all prove a tad grueling.

There is also a design which is basically a single pushchair that converts to a double. The benefit is that you are only ever pushing as much stroller as you need. Also the front pulls down into a bassinet, which can help the little ones to sleep while you are out and about. These are not as heavy or unwieldy as the other alternatives. The disadvantage of this however, is that the second seat is sold separately, and there is no escaping the limited view of the backseat.

Across the different types of buggy you can choose from, there are a some additional things to look for. One would be wheel type and size. Generally speaking, the larger the wheel, the more comfortable the ride, though there can be tradeoffs with respect to taking turns. Also, the type of wheel will come into play if you plan to jog with the stroller.

You might also wish to assess how the buggies fold down, and weigh up whether or not you want a slip cover of some kind. Not all buggies fold down easily, and this can become a major sticking point if you plan to take the stroller in and out of the car, on aircraft, up and down stairs and so. The weight of the stroller should be taken into consideration. Some buggies are made with sturdy lightweight materials, while others trade off the additional weight for durability. There is no right or wrong, it is more a matter of making sure the aspects of the stroller fit your requirements.

Finally, it is worth thinking about accessories that often come with buggies, including cup holders, bag holders, umbrellas and so on. Most of these are sold separately, and in some cases, buying all the available accessories that attach can substantially increase the amount you pay. Many of these accessories are nice to have, but the cost can get out of hand quickly.

Also, with the drinking cup holder in particular, evaluate how these features will impact the passenger. Some strollers place the drinking cup holder in a place where the hot coffee can easily spill out on the baby’s head below.
