Safety Tips In Using Highchair For Your Baby

One of the most useful things that a baby must have is a highchair especially when he starts eating solid foods. However, a highchair is not necessary for babies until he is able to sit up.

Manufacturers have developed baby highchairs with different kinds of features, which make it more comfortable for the child and more convenient for the parents and caregiver.  Some highchairs have padded seat covers for comfort.

Having a chair with wheels is not necessary as the baby keeps on moving. You can also adjust the height of some highchairs so that you can level it to the height of your table when eating. Some models have foot rests that can be adjusted as your baby grows. Another new feature of this baby chair is that they can be folded for easy storage.

When buying this chair, the base should be broad and stable to prevent it from tipping when your baby leans on one side of the chair. It is a good idea then to teach your baby to sit up all the time.

Highchairs available in the market are made of different materials such as wood, metal and plastic. Most of the highchairs made of all-wood do not have height adjustment mechanism.

No matter how stable the baby highchair is, it is important that you take precautionary measures to avoid accidents. Do not leave your child unattended. Before putting him on his throne, you should have everything ready. Make sure that you put on the strap every time you put your baby on the chair.

If you open a folded highchair, be sure that it is locked in open position to avoid possible collapse on the furniture and may cause accident to your baby. It is also a good idea to check every part of the chair every time your baby uses it. Also, check the foam cover if it is not torn as your baby may swallow small pieces of foam.

While highchairs give comfort for the baby and convenience for the parents, it is important that you ensure safety for your baby in buying one.

Tips For Using a Breastpump at Work

Breastfeeding is a wonderful experience for mothers and infants alike. Not only is it the healthiest way possible to feed your baby and add antibodies to his diet, it is also a wonderful way to create a bond between the two of you. While some mothers and babies have difficulty in the beginning of finding the right nursing position and the proper latch on technique, most mothers are reluctant to stop breastfeeding when their maternity leave from work comes to an end.

Most women find that they are just getting comfortable in breastfeeding their baby at the end of the six week period. Although doubtful, many mothers give in to formula feeding for one main reason; hesitances to use a breast pump. However, pumping your breasts during the day and allowing your baby to nurse at night can too be a pleasant experience for both mother and child.

One main concern that many breastfeeding mothers have when returning to work is privacy. It may not always be possible to have an office or room to yourself to pump. However, many breast pumps are equipped with car adaptors.

If there are no options for pumping within your building, then you may want to consider using your car as a pumping station. Another major concern for many mothers going back to work after maternity leave is time. Mothers worry about when they will have time during their workday to use a breast pump. Lunch break is the most common time for women to pump their breasts.

Many women find that bringing a sandwich for lunch and eating while pumping works best. It is likely that you will have a little time left over for socializing or carrying out your normal lunchtime routines.

Be certain to invest the extra money in an electric double breast pump. Pumping both breasts at one time is much faster than using single or manual pumps. Pumping harnesses are also good for keeping your hands free. If another time during the day is not available, discuss your concerns with your boss. It is likely that he or she will allow you another opportunity during the day.

Milk storage can also be an issue for working women who breastfeed their babies. Breast milk can be left at room temperature for a short amount of time. However, it is best to store the milk in dated storage bags and place them in a cool location. If you have the space, a mini refrigerator is a wise investment. Simply store the milk until the end of the day and carry it home at night. If you work on the road and cannot use a refrigerator, many pumps include an insulated section for milk storage.

Place a couple of ice packs into these insulated locations or coolers and store your milk there. Once at home, place the milk in the refrigerator or freezer. Breastfeeding does not need to end when you return to work. Many mothers have much success in using a breast pump at work. While much good advice is available from experienced moms, the best policy is to find a routine and location in which you are comfortable. Once these are established, pumping will come with ease.

With the current state of the economy as well as the environment, many people are making changes to curb cost and help with pollution. New parents are no exception. There are many products that can help give you piece of mind when it comes to these new issues. One of these products is the cloth diaper.

There are many different types of cloth diapering systems, all with their own benefits, but there is one diapering system that wins hands down when it comes to ease of use, cost effectiveness, and environmental friendliness. The two-part pre-fold is the most well-rounded cloth diaper system.  However, here is a list of each of the cloth diapering systems and each of their benefits and downfalls.

The pocket cloth diaper is designed for ease of use. The cloth is stuffed inside of the diaper beforehand and can be put onto the child in a matter of seconds. The downside to this diaper is that the entire diaper becomes dirty with one soiling. This means that you cannot just remove the diaper from the pocket because the pocket also becomes wet. You will need a lot of this type of diaper to keep up with your child’s wetting cycle.

The all in one cloth diaper is 2 things a diaper and a wrap in one. This type is much like the pocket design except that the diaper has no pocket but comes pre stuffed. Like the pocket design they are easy to use and go on very quick. This also has the same down falls as the pocket style diaper in that you will need to fully wash each diaper after each soiling. This means you will need a lot of diapers and a lot of time to wash them.

The one-size fits all cloth diaper is designed to be the last diaper you will ever need. They are usually in the style of the all in one or the pocket cloth diaper but have a great deal of adjustment to fit your child from newborn to toddler. The major downfall of this product is that there is simply no way that a diaper can be one size fits all. Not just purely in size but the amount of liquid a newborn produces is far less than that of a toddler.

The last and aforementioned form of cloth diapers is clearly far superior, the two part pre-fold system made popular by Real Nappies. With this system the cloth diaper is separate from the cover. This way the inside cloth is the only thing that’s affected by the wetting of the diaper. All you have to do is remove the cloth and put in a new one. This means you will need less supplies and less time in the washroom.

Another great benefit is that each cover is a different size for a different stage in the child’s growth. With this you are ensured a perfect fit from infant to toddler. So as research will show the system popularized by Real Nappies is the best overall option when you look at all aspects cost, ease of use, and eco friendliness.  To top it off Real Nappies offers a two child gurantee. So your cloth diaper system will last and last or you’ll get replacements!

Francis Frost is the owner of Module Marketing in Auckland New Zealand. He is the new father of a 21 week old boy and an advocate of cloth diapering and buying cloth diaper birth-to-potty solutions, especially the Real Nappies system.

Choosing a toy for a toddler

During the early stages of a child’s life their brain is learning in an exponential manner. It is important that their brain is stimulated and one of the best ways to do this is by giving them toys.

I would suggest that for a toddler a soft toy is the best way forward – they won’t hurt their siblings by throwing it at them.

One of the things you need to look carefully at is what recommended age range the toy is for. An age range of 4+ would signify possible small parts – the last thing you want is for your child to choke on a toy they are playing with.

Here are some recommendations :

Manhattan Toys – these soft toys are designed with a small child in mind – their Baby Stella collection is an obvious choice.

Hand puppets – these are great for encouraging your child to role play and develop their imagination.

Soft books – these are an excellent introduction to books – choose something bright and colourful

Goovy Girls – great for kids with a passion for fashion

In conclusion a toy for a small child needs to be chosen carefully – try and make sure it is educational, fun and safe.

Here are some general guidelines to keep in mind when toy-shopping:

  • Toys made of fabric should be labeled as flame resistant or flame retardant.
  • Stuffed toys should be washable.
  • Painted toys should be covered with lead-free paint.
  • Art materials should say nontoxic.
  • Crayons and paints should say ASTM D-4236 on the package, which means that they’ve been evaluated by the American Society for Testing and Materials.

Steer clear of older toys, even hand-me-downs from friends and family. Those toys might have sentimental value and are certainly cost-effective, but they may not meet current safety standards and may be so worn from play that they can break and become hazardous.

Baby Keepsake Gifts: What Are Those Exactly

During a recent trip back East I met up with a friend who showed me her nursery adorned with baby keepsake gifts. Don’t worry, I didn’t know what they were at first either, but you should learn.

This old friend, whom I have known since college, hadn’t seen each other for a few years so this was my first time seeing her since she had given birth to her new six month old son. The kid was beautiful and she looked great (she credited that to good genes and a great personal trainer), but one of the things that I was most impressed with was the child’s nursery. Besides beautiful furniture and subtle but wonderful paintings, the room was adorned with a variety of baby keepsake gifts from different family members. This gave the room a personal touch that was hard to miss. So, the first question you probably have after reading the opening paragraph is probably the same question I had upon entering the nursery: what exactly are baby keepsake gifts? Essentially it’s just a fancy word for heartfelt baby gifts which are given to a newborn for them to either play with or decorate their nursery. They can range from usable to decorative and in price from $1 to, well, just about anything. Keepsake gifts are all about emotional value and are gifts that will be kept and cherished throughout a child’s life.

When I returned from my little East Coast jaunt, I started keeping an eye out for these keepsake gifts as many of my girlfriends are either already or trying to get pregnant. I found that there are dozens of websites and specialty shops offering different types of keepsake gifts for almost every type of baby or taste. These keepsake gifts included such typical fair as towels and plush toys, to decorative gifts such as plaques, paintings and tins and even seasonal items such as ornaments. Each of these products was beautifully crafted and hand decorated.

A few of the items I came across really impressed me, such as a rocking horse (a bit out of my price range, but nice none-the-less), a simple hand crafted piggy bank (it’s never too early to teach kids the importance of money) and small, soft hangable crosses (which I actually purchased for an upcoming Christening I’m invited to). I was a bit surprised at how big of a business these baby keepsake gifts are, but then again, we all love to give baby gifts to newborns, so why not give them something that parents will be sure to keep and cherish throughout a their life. Sounds like a good purchase to me.

How to Make a Successful Office Party

As offices have become second homes for many business oriented people, the office party has begun to slowly evolve from a standard store bought birthday cake to something more. Now everything from upcoming baby births to anniversaries are being celebrated at office buildings, and birthday cakes and streamers are being replaced by gourmet cupcakes, gift exchanges and even designer baby gift baskets for office baby showers.

While different companies will have different policies on what can and cannot be offered at office parties (some will even allow wine… party down), there are some things to remember when trying to plan the best office party for a fellow employee. Whether it’s a surprise party or something that they will have the final say on, office parties are best done as a temporary celebration, and distraction, that can be quick, fun, and ultimately allow people to get to work quickly before anyone gets in too much trouble. Because these parties must be done within office guidelines, be sure to run each step by a manager, or someone in charge. Make sure your get-together follows the guidelines put forth in your employee handbooks to a t so that no one gets in trouble for it (that would be bad).

Probably the main reason people will attend an office party will be for food. Let’s not kid ourselves, while they like the person you’re throwing the party for, the idea of free food during the work day is usually the main attraction. Since the current economy might limit the amount of food that a company is willing to buy for a said party, the best way to get everyone well fed might be a potluck. While the word “potluck” has gotten a bad rap, work potlucks usually have some pretty good food. If everyone is not up for a potluck then maybe you can have everyone chip in a few bucks for catering.

Once the food is out of the way, you can now focus on the other important part of any office party: gifts. Usually the two biggest office celebrations are birthdays and baby showers. While gifts for birthdays are usually a personal preference, for baby showers co-workers usually like to combine their funds for a “big” gift. This can be anything from gift baskets to strollers to cribs. Make sure you collect the money first and that you get a gift that the mother to be doesn’t already have. This way the party can be a success and the fabled tradition of office parties will have another great entry.

Every baby is a blessing and you, as parents, are stewards of this blessing. You have waited long enough to welcome him to the outside world. If you are a first time parent, you may find these tips helpful in looking after your newborn.

1. Feed your baby right. Whether you have decided to feed your baby with breast milk or infant formula, make sure that you are giving him the right amount and at the right time.

Studies have proven that breast milk is still the best nourishment for newborn. However, if you have decided to use infant formula, check its label for the proper quantity and time interval for feeding your baby, unless your doctor recommends otherwise. Help your baby burp after feeding.

2. Have your baby get enough sleep. Newborn babies spend most hours of the day sleeping. During the first few weeks, your baby may sleep for only 30 minutes to 3 hours. After six weeks or more, you will notice that the sleeping pattern of your baby will change.

Do not be bothered if your baby keeps on sleeping as it helps in the mental and physical development of a child. However, you should wake him up if it is time to feed him.

3. Know the proper way of bathing your baby. Bathing a newborn for the first time can be the most terrifying experience for a first time mom. You do not have to bathe a newborn baby everyday.

It is enough to bathe him two to three times in a week using only a sponge. You should do this quickly since your baby is not yet used to cold environment.

Make sure that the umbilical cord will not get wet to avoid infection. You can only do tub bathing once the umbilical cord of your baby falls off.

4. Take good care of your baby’s delicate skin. His skin is very sensitive and so you should only use products for babies. They are also prone to skin rashes which are normal. However, if the rashes cause irritation and fever, you should consult your pediatrician.

5. Know when to give your baby his medicine. When your baby was required by the doctor to undergo certain medication, you should observe proper dosage and be conscious on any possible adverse reaction of your baby to the medication.

8 Tips in Making Your Home Safe for Your Baby

Keeping your baby away from danger is one of the most important things that parents should consider. Even if your baby is at the comfort of your own home, you still have to be sure that he is one hundred percent safe and out of risk. Below are some helpful tips to keep your baby safe at home.

1. Do not let anyone smoke inside your house or do any type of drugs.

2. Keep your doors locked to prevent dangerous people or animals from entering your house. You are also preventing your toddler from going outside your house.

3. Having a pet or animal at home is not safe for your baby. If you already have a pet, make sure that it cannot get near your baby to prevent him from getting hurt and at the same time preventing any allergies that may be caused by pet dander.

4. Always check on your baby while he is asleep. Make sure that he sleeps on his back to avoid suffocation or crib death. Remove any unnecessary stuff inside the crib such as toys, blankets, extra pillows, and the like.

5. Make sure that the crib is safe that your baby will not fall from it. The bars of the crib should be close enough so that the baby cannot slip through and to avoid your baby’s head from getting stuck on it.

6. If you have stairs at home and your baby starts to crawl, putting child gates will prevent him from falling down the steps. Child gates are available in department stores. You can also put them in doorways so that your little one will not go out. You may also use them to prevent animals from getting near your baby.

7. Cover electrical outlets at home when your child can reach them. Put a soft or rubber material on the edges of tables, as your child will bump at them once they start to walk. Check on the kid’s section of department stores for home gadgets that you can purchase for your child’s safety.

8. Keep materials that may harm your child out of reach. Do not let any small object lying around because your baby may swallow it as he explore things through his mouth.

Prevention of problems is still better than finding solutions to it. Have your child dwell in a safe home.
