As babies start growing, they achieve one milestone after another. As soon as the babies learn to hold their heads up, they are prepared to learn sitting up on their own too. Achieving this milestone should be a team baby-parent effort and there are a few ways to make it enjoyable and safe.

Normally, babies learn sitting up on their own between four and six months of age, or maybe sooner depending how steady they can hold their heads up. Your baby will try to sit up by employing his individual effort but quite possibly he will not be successful in his very first attempt.  Not to worry, parents’ help is on the way. By introducing some healthy and playful activities in your baby’s daily routine and adding some extra support you can help your baby’s progress and achieve this milestone together.

The best technique to use is the propping up technique. You can place your baby in a sitting position and surround him with cushions and pillows to create a nest like space for your baby to sit while resting his back against the cushions. You can then engage the baby in different activities by letting him play with toys, his bottle, and even holding your finger. By using this method, even if the baby falls, he won’t be hurt and when tired can always lean backwards or on the side for a little rest.  Gradually extend the time your baby spends in his sitting nest till he strengthens his muscles and gets accustomed to the new position. Be reasonable and don’t overdo it; give your baby fun time instead of exhausting it.  We all know that a tired baby is a cranky baby.

Another technique is when holding your baby in your lap to let him sit up by resting his back against your stomach. This way he will learn to sit straight up while using your body as a backrest. You can then read a book or play with him.  This way you are not only helping your child in his sitting attempts, you are also getting the much needed rest and the two of you are having the most precious quality time.

Another way to teach your baby the act of sitting up on his own is by using one of the baby products specially designed for these purpose like a crescent shaped pillow or a special baby seat.  You can let your baby sit inside the crescent which provides support and also helps baby’s muscles grow stronger. A specially designed baby seat is another alternative to help your baby master the technique of sitting up on his own.  It provides the required amount of support and babies generally like it because it offers a better view than lying on the floor.  These baby propping products should not be used on elevated surfaces but rather placed safely on the floor. As with any baby product don’t undermine the warnings and read and follow the safety instructions to the letter.

Whatever method you choose to help your babies learn to sit on their own, never ever leave them unattended.  Be always around to ensure that they will not fall or hurt themselves or get buried under supporting pillows. By employing these techniques you and your baby will accomplish another major milestone in his development – independent sitting!
